Hair Disorders

Hair disorders are common in our community and the cause of much physical and psychological stress.

Dermatologists remain at the forefront in scientific research into hair abnormalities. The following are the more common presentations we see but there are many less common hair abnormalities which require the expertise of a dermatologist to diagnose and treat.

ALOPECIA: is not a diagnosis but a term that describes hair loss. The most common site is the scalp but can affect any hair bearing site of the body (armpits, groin, eyebrows, beard). It can be patchy and diffuse. It can be reversible or permanent.

Common causes are

  • Alopecia Areata
  • Telogen Effluvium
  • Female and male pattern hair loss

Your dermatologist can use clinical examination and other investigations such as blood tests and biopsy to diagnose the cause of alopecia. Once the cause is determined a management plan specific to your condition can be commenced.

EXCESSIVE HAIR: describes increased density of hair in cosmetically unacceptable sites such as the face, abdomen and / or around the nipples. This is usually more of a problem in women and may be related to hormonal abnormalities. Thorough examination and investigation by your dermatologist can determine the cause and thereby best treatment for your condition.
